Whether this is your first pregnancy or your fourth, we can all relate to that feeling where you get home from a long day at work or a long day chasing the kids around and just need to kick back and throw your feet up. Then you wake up, maybe re-energized or maybe more tired but hey you do it all again because you simply don't have another choice. Then all of the sudden you are struck with sharp low back pain and your pubic bone is painful to the touch. You now are left awake with these deep aches and you can’t seem to get comfortable. You wake up exhausted and are unsure if you actually ever did fall asleep. I remember when I got hit with a bout of low back pain during my first pregnancy. It was in the middle of my week where I was treating a minimum of 15 patients per day. I was trying to be very mindful of my core during the whole pregnancy, ensuring I would do everything in my power to prevent a diastasis recti and a perineal tear with delivery. Doing all the exercises and stretches that I give my own patients but I knew this called for some hands on magic. I was able to get one of my skilled co-workers to reset my muscles and get me back to pain free so I could continue healing others. The beauty is this only took one session of hands on work.
As the pelvis expands and accommodates for the baby, it is not uncommon for the expecting mother to go through these bouts of low back and pelvic pain. What most women don’t know is that they don’t have to suffer through these dreadful times. Women’s heath physical therapists have tons of knowledge and skillful hands to help conquer pregnancy related pains. Live your best pregnancy and enjoy it.
